Bus: Hop on and score big

Taking the bus is one of the more laid-back ways to help your team win Commuter Challenge. Get on, sit back, relax and let TransLink battle the traffic for you. Use the online Trip Planner to schedule your day down to each stop. Also, check out TransLink’s Next Bus feature which allows you to find the next bus on your regular rout by text messaging 33333 together with the bus stop code. Within seconds, Next Bus replies with the arrival times of the next six scheduled buses at that stop. You can also access Next Bus information online.

TransLink's Employer Pass Program allows companies to offer discounted annual transit passes to their employees when 25 or more employees are enrolled into the program. The pass entitles the passholder to travel on any bus or Community Shuttle operated by a TransLink subsidiary or contractor (except HandyDART), SkyTrain and SeaBus. Passes for West Coast Express are also available. For more information, and details on when your company can join the program, please e-mail EPPdesk@translink.bc.ca.

Rideshare: Call 'shotgun' early

Ride along with someone to work, school or that popular nightspot and spend less on gas and parking while taking a few cars of the road. You might even get there quicker with the help of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. Ridesharing is convenient for commuters who work both regular and irregular schedules, have part-time jobs or attend university. Find your perfect carpool partner for free with the help of Jack-Bell Rideshare’s online ride matching program. Jack-Bell can help you set up a vanpool (7-8 commuters) or a carpool (3-5 commuters) using your own vehicle or one from their fleet!

There are 27 priority parking spaces at the Scott Road SkyTrain Station designated exclusively for carpools and vanpools. These spaces are available at no charge to ride-share groups who posses a valid Scott Road Ride-Share Parking Pass and arrive with at least two people in the vehicle.

Telecommute: Leave your fuzzy slippers on

Quite possibly the easiest way to score points during Commuter Challenge. By working from home via a laptop, cell phone or any other electronic device you’ll be able to eliminate your commute to work altogether. Telecommuting saves time and money but remember to have a chat with your boss before trying this new commuting mode.

LEARN MORE ABOUT TELECOMMUTING

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2008, a reported 33.7 million U.S. employees telecommuted at least one day per month. Companies who integrated telecommuting found that the biggest advantages included better retention rates, a decrease in employee stress and the ability to hire the most qualified staff, regardless of where they live.

Bicycle: Freedom on two wheels

With more than 177 kilometers of bike routes, getting to work while getting some exercise has never been so easy! Take advantage of our cycle-friendly transit by bringing your bike on the bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus or West Coast Express. More interested in Park and Ride? Leave your bike at secure bike lockers located at the majority of skytrain stations across the lower mainland. Also, don’t forget to use the UBC Cycle Vancouver interactive route planner to help you get from Point A to Point B.

DID YOU KNOW?

Vancouver’s urban bike law says that all cyclists must wear helmets, may not wear headphones while biking on streets and must keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times. Bikes must have a functioning bell and must have a lit white light in front and lit red light in the rear if riding between 30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise.

Car Sharing: Share the cost, reap the benefits

Want access to wheels at a lower cost? Car sharing provides joint access to one or a fleet of vehicles without the high costs of owning and maintaining a car yourself. It's a way to have a car when you really need one while relying on alternatives such as transit, walking or cycling for other trips. Car sharing reduces the number of vehicles on the road, eliminates a majority of the costs of car ownership and is fast and simple to use. Check out the Cooperative Auto Network for more information.

Walk: Add a swagger to your commute

Hundreds of generations of humans can’t be wrong! Walking is certainly the oldest and perhaps most physical of all modes. Not as relaxing as taking the bus or light rail, but certainly a good way to get some fresh air while commuting.

Sky Train & West Coast Express: Ride the rails, win the challenge

Get a view of the city while speeding to your next destination! Currently, Metro Vancouver’s combination of rail and light-rail transit spans 117.5 Kilometers. Come Fall 2009, the new Richmond Line will be unveiled and will make riding the rails even easier!

SkyTrain vehicles and stations are monitored and managed during all hours of operation by a dedicated team of SkyTrain customer service staff and security personnel. The on-train Passenger Silent Alarm is a yellow strip above every window, which allows passengers to silently alert SkyTrain control operators in the event of a security concern.

Sea Bus: Ahoy matey!

Get that healthy sea breeze while commuting to and from downtown Vancouver on the SeaBus. This passenger service consists of two double-ended catamaran ferries, each seating up to 400 passengers. The trip across Vancouver's scenic Burrard Inlet from downtown Vancouver to the North Shore takes just 12 minutes.

The turnstiles on the entrance into the SeaBus waiting area are used for counting the number of passengers boarding the SeaBus. When the maximum number is reached the turnstiles will "lock" and no more passengers will be allowed on that SeaBus.
